Lucy’s RV Park

Lucy’s is a quaint RV park in a residential area of LaVeta, CO.  The owners of Lucy’s are extremely hospitable and I enjoyed visiting with them. They frequently host potluck dinners and I understand that they sometimes have live music. They work hard to have a family atmosphere and keep their campers happy. The sites are all full hook-ups, mostly shaded with some grass and picnic tables. However, they are really close to one another and our site was unlevel. (If you have a big rig, request a pull-through site. I’m afraid backing in would be a really difficult maneuver.)  Free WI-FI is offered, but not reliable.

Our biggest complaint was the road noise.  Our particular space was situated on the corner with a stop sign just behind our RV. To make matters worse, that stop sign is at the junction that leads to the entrance of the famous Highway of Legends.  You’ve probably heard of the well-known scenic byway.  The highway travels through a mountainous region near the Spanish Peaks beginning at LaVeta and ending in Trinidad.  So as you can imagine, the road was very busy and traffic was loud. Not ideal for relaxing.

With that said, it’s obvious that the park is ideally located for taking advantage of the picturesque drive. So we did! Our reservation at Lucy’s was for three nights and we took the ride up to the village of Cuchara twice (we opted not to travel on to Trinidad). There is a reason this scenic drive is so renowned!  The narrow road winds between beautiful mountains through Aspen groves and over the Cuchara River.  The Colorado Great Dikes are scattered along the byway and are amazing. These vertical formations were originally formed from molten rock due to volcanic activity in the Spanish Peaks region.  They stand high and proud.  A must see if you are in this part of Colorado!

Each time we returned from an excursion we were greeted with the smiling face of the owner, Evelyn.  I don’t know of any other RV park we have stayed at that made us feel so welcome.  So maybe we can deal with the road noise just to see that smiling face again!
